What to expect from Sony Alpha in 2020

While Nikon and Canon were launching new DSLR cameras, Sony was busy concentrating all their resources on developing their Mirrorless Camera System. Sony clearly understood Mirrorless is the future and put out cameras after cameras under SonyAlpha branding. Thanks to this early vision, they got a head start in the mirrorless camera market.

The Sony A6000 Mirrorless Camera with an APS-C crop sensor ( even though ship with the worst Kit lens on any camera ) became an instant hit. It was replacing two cameras - Nex 6 and Nex7. I myself bought one in 2015 and was amazed by how lightweight and easy to carry around this camera is. Sony released many more in the A6000 series after that - A6300, A6500, A6600, A6400, and A6100. All were received quite well, except the A6300 which had some severe heating issues during long 4K recording.

In the Full Frame Mirrorless Market, Sony was the only manufacturer launching new cameras. Only recently Nikon, Canon and Panasonic stepped into this segment.

First-gen A7 and A7R weren't perfect, but they listened to customers and improved the next-gen variants with better specs and features. A7R Mark 2 with its 42MP sensor became the new favorite camera of many landscape and nature photographers all over the world. They launched A7R Mark 3 after a while and didn't even change the sensor - it was that good - but improved on other areas making it a much better all-around camera.

Sony then put out A7 Mark 3, which set a high standard for it's competitors to aim for. It became one of the best selling Full Frame mirrorless bodies in the market.

Sony also launched A9 Series aimed at Photo Journalists and Sports Photographers with some incredible specs and Auto Focus features. Eye AF and Animal AF features on these performed exceptionally well. These also came with plenty more Auto Focus points than competing DSLR high end sports cameras. It also was priced and weighed much lesser than those chunky DSLR bodies, making many Pros thinking about switching to the system.

It's 2020 Now - What can we expect from Sony Alpha in this year?

For Sony, until recently, they had not much competition in the mirrorless Full-frame market. However, now that Nikon, Canon and Panasonic are launching mirrorless cameras, Sony needs to push out better products than them so that they can still keep the mirrorless king crown.

The first Camera Sony is expected to launch in 2020 is the A7S Mark 3. The Mark 2 version is quite old now, and sony should have launched the Mark 3 by now. But they didn't. It is not clear why they haven't yet launched this successor. If Sony doesn't put out a camera with good specs, chances are we would see Nikon and Canon overtaking Sony in the Full Frame market in the coming years.

In my opinion, Sony needs to put out a camera with the following specs in 2020 to keep the Mirrorless Crown.

  • 8K @ 24fps recording ( this means minimum 33MP sensor )
  • 4K @ 60fps ( there is currently no Sony camera in the market that can do this - already available GH5 and others support this )
  • Better Menu system ( Sony cameras are notorious for having very bad Menu arrangement )
  • Dual Card Slots - UHS-II slots.
  • Better Design
  • Better Weather Sealing
Recently launched Sony A6600 - the high-end APS-C camera aimed at Videographers didn't offer 4K @ 60fps, which was quite surprising to see as many competitors were able to bring cameras with that feature aboard. Maybe, Sony is yet to perfect the 60fps mode or is waiting for a new Bionz X processor from their factories that can handle 60fps and 8K shooting better than the rest. I think this is the reason why Sony is yet to launch A7SM3.

Sony also needs to launch a true successor to its 50x Super Zoom point and shoot camera - Sony HX500V. Older HX400V and HX350 have been out for a while now, and do not offer raw shooting and image quality is not that good.

Let's wait and see what Sony will bring to the market in 2020. One thing is very clear, they don't fear to experiment, and this is the first time Sony is under pressure, so we can expect something incredible from Sony in 2020.

[ FIX ] Ubuntu 20.04 Bluetooth doesn't Turn On

I have been using a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard for a while now with my Ubuntu 20.04. Everything worked well without any issues until one day the operating system refused to turn on the Bluetooth. I could toggle Bluetooth On button from the Settings, but it did nothing.  After spending some time Google Searching why my Bluetooth started not working all of a sudden, and after trying a variety of commands to troubleshoot the problem, I finally found a working fix for this issue. Open a Terminal ( Ctrl + Alt + T )  and enter below commands one after another.  sudo rmmod btusb sudo modprobe btusb That's it. Your Bluetooth issue would be now solved.  I can guarantee you this problem is going to pop-up every now and then. So copy the above commands to a text file for future uses. Sometimes, even after entering above commands the bluetooth would refuse to turn on. In such cases, just Suspend the system and then wake up it again and check.
