How to take Great Photos with Honor 9X

Did you just buy the brand new Honor 9X ? Read on to know how to get the best out of Honor 9X 48MP main camera and 8MP ultra wide angle lens.

No matter which smartphone you own, if you keep an eye on a few settings, you can easily come up with some really good 'Instagram worthy' shots.

Honor 9X has a capable 48MP sensor, however, the recommended mode is 12MP. So which MP you should shoot with ? Leave it at the recommended 12MP as the image quality comparing to 48MP out of this.

Why is that you wonder. To put it in simple words, the 12MP mode combines 4 pixels into 1, resulting in better image quality and bigger pixel size. Bigger the individual pixel size, better the image quality is. Also, the image size of 48MP files are much bigger than the 12MP files.

DNG RAW Shooting

Usually, to get the best out of a smartphone camera, i would recommend shooting DNG RAW photos and edit them in Lightroom Mobile or Snapseed. Unfortunately, the Pro Mode on Honor 9X does not come with Dng Raw support.

AI Mode

Honor 9X, like all other Huawei mobiles, comes with an AI mode. When you shoot images in this mode, the AI processor recognises scenes and take photos in photo settings idle for that particular scenario it detected. It usually result in punchier more vibrant colors - perfect for Instagram. It can also detect faces, and automatically apply portrait mode to the image. If you prefer, true to life, normal photos, switch of the AI and shoot in the regular photo mode.

Pro Mode

Huawei's Camera app comes with a Pro mode, which lets you choose the settings you want instead of going Full Auto. You can choose ISO, Shutter Speed, Focus modes, White Balance etc.

When you shoot in regular photo mode, depending on the scene, even when there is enough light, often times the app increases the ISO instead of using the base ISO50. You get the best quality photos at the lowest possible ISO - in Honor 9X' case that is 50.

So, to get the best quality image, select ISO 50 in Pro mode and let the app automatically adjust the shutter speed needed to get the right exposure. Note that, when the light gets low, you would need to increase the ISO to bigger value in order to prevent shutter speed from falling below 1/100 or so. There is no image stabilization on Honor 9X, so i would recommend you shoot photos above 1/100 to avoid camera shakes / blur in photos.

Aperture Mode / Portrait Mode

Both these modes are similar - these let you shoot shots with Blurred Bokeh background. Portrait mode only works for Faces and let you choose the type of bokeh and beauty mode settings to apply. You can't adjust the intensity of the blur before or after shooting the image in this mode. Aperture mode on the other hand lets you adjust blur as well as focus even after the image is taken and saved.

I would recommend using Aperture mode when you are taking shots of close up objects, and then adjust the background blur intensity depending on the scene. This way, you can creat a DSLR like, bokeh look to your images.

Light Painting Modes

Huawei has this amazing Light Painting mode available on their smartphones. There are 4 modes part of it - Silky Water, Traffic Trails, Light Graffiti and Star Trails. You can use these modes to create some amazing long exposure shots. A tripod is necessary for this mode.

Macro Shots with Honor 9X. Is it possible ?

There is no dedicated macro mode on Honor 9X or 9X Pro. However, since this has a 48MP sensor, you can zoom in on the subject to get a magnified macro like shot ( up to 6x zoom on Honor 9X ). Keep in mind this is digital zoom and not optical zoom, hence the image quality won't be that good.

[ FIX ] Ubuntu 20.04 Bluetooth doesn't Turn On

I have been using a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard for a while now with my Ubuntu 20.04. Everything worked well without any issues until one day the operating system refused to turn on the Bluetooth. I could toggle Bluetooth On button from the Settings, but it did nothing.  After spending some time Google Searching why my Bluetooth started not working all of a sudden, and after trying a variety of commands to troubleshoot the problem, I finally found a working fix for this issue. Open a Terminal ( Ctrl + Alt + T )  and enter below commands one after another.  sudo rmmod btusb sudo modprobe btusb That's it. Your Bluetooth issue would be now solved.  I can guarantee you this problem is going to pop-up every now and then. So copy the above commands to a text file for future uses. Sometimes, even after entering above commands the bluetooth would refuse to turn on. In such cases, just Suspend the system and then wake up it again and check.
